Former Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani has died at the age of 74, Qatar’s Amiri Diwan announced on Sunday. Sheikh Hamad, who ruled Qatar from 1995 to 2013, was widely credited with transforming the Gulf nation into a global economic and diplomatic powerhouse through the development of its vast natural gas resources and ambitious modernization initiatives.

Under his leadership, Qatar significantly expanded its international influence, becoming a key player in regional diplomacy, global investments and major sporting events.

In 2013, Sheikh Hamad made the rare decision to voluntarily abdicate the throne, transferring power peacefully to his son, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, who continues to lead the country. His reign is remembered as a defining period in Qatar’s modern history, marked by rapid economic growth, infrastructure development and an increasingly prominent role in global affairs.

Tributes are expected from leaders across the Middle East and beyond, recognizing his lasting contribution to Qatar’s rise on the world stage.
