700-year-old banyan tree discovered in Bihar, researchers say

Indian researchers have identified what is believed to be a 700-year-old banyan tree in the state of Bihar, making it the oldest scientifically age-verified banyan tree recorded to date, according to Indian media reports.

Scientists determined the tree’s age using advanced scientific techniques, including radiocarbon dating. Samples were collected from the tree’s inner section and analysed by examining the most stable component of its cellular material before undergoing highly sensitive testing.

The analysis revealed that the banyan tree is approximately 700 years old, far older than earlier estimates of 300 to 350 years. Previous assumptions linked the tree’s age to a nearby historic structure, but the latest research challenges that view.
