Electric vehicle (EV) sales in Russia are increasing as a nationwide fuel shortage and petrol price surge push consumers toward alternative transport options. The crisis, driven by disruptions to Russia’s fuel supply chain, has made gasoline more expensive and less accessible in several regions, encouraging more drivers to consider electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles.
Dealerships in major cities such as Moscow are reporting noticeably higher demand. Some EV sellers say daily sales have jumped from only a few units per month to several per day, with plug-in hybrid sales rising sharply compared to the previous year. Analysts note that while EV adoption in Russia remains relatively low overall, interest has accelerated significantly during the current fuel shortage.
Despite this growth, electric vehicles still represent a small share of Russia’s total car market due to challenges like limited charging infrastructure and harsh climate conditions. However, experts say the ongoing petrol crisis is acting as a catalyst, temporarily boosting EV adoption as consumers look for more reliable and cost-effective transportation options.
