Emergency crews are working to contain the devastating wildfire in southeastern Spain after at least 12 people, including four Britons, were killed and dozens remain missing.
Emergency services are battling one of Spain’s worst-ever wildfires after a massive blaze swept through the area around Bédar in the southeastern province of Almería.
According to Spanish authorities, 12 people have died, including four British nationals, while 23 others remain missing as search and rescue operations continue.
Hundreds of firefighters, emergency responders and specialist teams have been deployed to contain remaining pockets of fire and prevent the blaze from spreading further.
Local officials in the Los Gallardos area warned that the death toll could rise, with concerns that more British citizens may be among the victims.
The wildfire comes amid an intense heatwave across Southern Europe, where temperatures have climbed to around 40°C (104°F), creating ideal conditions for fast-moving fires.
Spain, along with France and Portugal, has experienced a series of destructive wildfires this summer as prolonged heat and dry weather continue to fuel extreme fire conditions across the region.
Authorities have urged residents to follow evacuation orders and avoid affected areas while emergency services work to bring the wildfire under control.
