MANCHESTER: Floyd Samba made a stunning Manchester City first-team debut, scoring twice in the club’s 5-0 Carabao Cup third-round victory over Norwich City at the Etihad Stadium on Thursday.

The 17-year-old forward delivered an impressive performance that attracted widespread attention, overshadowing discussions surrounding Manchester United’s highly rated 15-year-old teenager JJ Gabriel.

Samba’s breakthrough comes after an outstanding season with Manchester City’s under-18 team and his promotion to the first-team squad under manager Enzo Maresca this summer.

The young forward took full advantage of his opportunity, scoring two goals during his first professional appearance and earning the Man of the Match award.

Samba said he had expected an opportunity to play some first-team minutes but described his debut performance as an extraordinary experience.

“To get a debut like that is mind-blowing.”

The teenager expressed confidence in his future and credited Manchester City’s senior players for supporting him before the match.

He said teammates encouraged him to play naturally and trust his abilities, advice that helped him deliver a memorable performance.

Samba opened the scoring by flicking a header into the net before adding a second goal later in the game with a composed finish.

The youngster played the full 90 minutes and received a warm reception from supporters after being named Man of the Match.

Floyd Samba joined Manchester City’s academy at under-nine level and established himself as one of the club’s promising young talents.

During the previous season, he scored 24 goals and recorded 10 assists in his first full campaign with the under-18 team.

His performances included a memorable free-kick in the FA Youth Cup final against Manchester United in May, helping City secure victory over their local rivals.

Those achievements contributed to his promotion to first-team training during the summer.

Samba’s Carabao Cup debut now provides an important early milestone in his development as he seeks more opportunities at senior level.

Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca selected Samba as a central striker for the match, despite the youngster acknowledging that he had not previously played in that position.

Maresca explained that Samba was not a traditional number nine but praised his energy, strength, finishing ability and decision-making.

“He is young, full of energy, strong, can finish”

The manager also emphasized the importance of managing the teenager’s development carefully and providing opportunities gradually.

Maresca expressed hope that Samba would receive additional first-team chances in the future.

Floyd Samba is the son of former Premier League defender Christopher Samba, who played for Blackburn Rovers and Queens Park Rangers.

Christopher Samba made 171 Premier League appearances for the two clubs and also played 12 Championship matches for Aston Villa.

Unlike his father, who was known as a physically imposing central defender, Floyd has developed as a fleet-footed forward.

The teenager is one of two brothers involved with Manchester City’s youth setup, with his brother Tyrone also playing in the club’s academy.

Floyd said the transition from under-21 football to first-team training had been demanding, particularly because senior sessions require greater intensity and physical effort.
