BERLIN: At least one person was killed and 17 others injured after a vehicle rammed into a crowd near Berlin’s Pride celebrations on Saturday evening, prompting German authorities to launch a major manhunt for the suspect.
Police said the incident occurred near the Tiergarten park, close to the iconic Brandenburg Gate, where thousands had gathered for Pride-related events.
According to officials, the vehicle drove into a group of pedestrians shortly after 10:00 p.m. local time (2000 GMT) before crashing into a tree.
Police Search for Suspect
Authorities said the vehicle was found abandoned after the crash, with no occupants inside, prompting an intensive search for the driver or any possible accomplices.
“We are currently working intensively to track down the perpetrator or perpetrators,” a police spokesperson told reporters at the scene.
Investigators later confirmed that a suspect had been identified, but no arrests had been made by late Saturday.
Police have not yet disclosed the identity of the suspect or commented on a possible motive.
Several Victims in Critical Condition
Emergency services said 17 people were injured, including eight who sustained serious injuries.
According to the Berlin Fire Brigade, three victims remain in life-threatening condition, while others were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Medical teams and emergency responders quickly secured the area as police cordoned off the scene to begin forensic investigations.
Investigation Underway
Authorities have launched a full investigation into the incident and are examining whether it was a deliberate attack or another type of criminal act.
Police have urged witnesses and anyone with video footage or information to come forward as investigators continue gathering evidence.
Security has also been increased across central Berlin while the manhunt remains ongoing.
