Pakistan warns of fake ‘Cyber Hero Card’ scam stealing citizens’ data
A new online scam targeting Pakistani citizens has come to light, with fraudsters allegedly using the name of cyber security initiatives to steal personal information and extort money.
According to the National Computer Emergency Response Team (National CERT), scammers are promoting fake offers of a “Cyber Hero Card,” cyber security training, and free laptops through social media to deceive the public.
Officials said the fraudulent campaign is being run through a social media page called “Cyber Secure Pakistan,” which is reportedly operated from outside Pakistan. The page uses misleading advertisements and false claims to attract unsuspecting users.
Fake registration used to collect personal data
National CERT warned that citizens are being encouraged to register for a fake Cyber Hero Card with promises of free cyber security training and complimentary laptops.
During the registration process, victims are asked to provide sensitive personal information, including their Computerised National Identity Card (CNIC) number and other details, which can later be misused for fraud.
Authorities also revealed that the scammers are using the name and photograph of a federal minister to make the fake campaign appear authentic and gain public trust.
National CERT issues public warning
National CERT has taken notice of the misleading posts circulating across social media platforms and urged citizens to remain vigilant.
A spokesperson for National CERT told Samaa TV that the so-called Cyber Hero Card campaign is completely fake and has not been launched or endorsed by National CERT or any other government institution.
The spokesperson advised the public not to register for the Cyber Hero Card or respond to offers of free laptops linked to the campaign. National CERT has also contacted the relevant social media platforms to have the fraudulent content removed and prevent more people from falling victim to the scam.
