Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed authorities to develop a national strategy to ban the manufacture and use of substandard syringes in an effort to reduce the spread of AIDS, Hepatitis C and other infectious diseases across Pakistan.

The directive was issued during a high-level meeting chaired by the prime minister to review the country’s efforts to prevent and control infectious diseases.

During the meeting, PM Shehbaz said unsafe medical practices, including the use of low-quality syringes, are a major factor contributing to the spread of life-threatening infections. He instructed the relevant authorities to ensure strict enforcement against the production and use of substandard syringes.

The prime minister also ordered legal action against individuals involved in supplying or using unsafe syringes, as well as hospitals found guilty of negligence in implementing disease prevention measures.

Expert committee to prepare recommendations

To strengthen Pakistan’s response, PM Shehbaz directed the formation of a special committee comprising public health experts. The committee will recommend practical measures to control infectious diseases and will consult provincial governments to ensure a coordinated national strategy.

He further instructed the Ministry of Law to work with relevant institutions on proposing amendments to the existing legal and regulatory framework where necessary.

The prime minister also directed the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) to engage with the medical device industry and submit policy recommendations aimed at improving the quality and safety of medical equipment.

Focus on long-term disease prevention

PM Shehbaz stressed that controlling AIDS, Hepatitis C and other infectious diseases requires a comprehensive national strategy backed by effective implementation.

He said Pakistan should also promote local manufacturing of medical treatment equipment, improve the training of healthcare professionals to international standards and continue working closely with global partners to strengthen the country’s healthcare system.

The prime minister added that international cooperation remains vital in preventing the spread of infectious diseases and improving public health outcomes across Pakistan.
