The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has issued 47 district-level internet licences in 2026 as part of efforts to improve broadband access, promote competition, and expand digital connectivity across Pakistan.

According to official documents, the first district-level internet licence was granted in February 2026. The PTA issued 12 new licences in March, followed by 14 in May and a record 20 licences in June, reflecting a significant acceleration in the rollout of internet service providers.

Lahore received the highest number of district-level Class Licences, with seven licences issued during the period. Sargodha ranked second in licence applications, while Faisalabad and Islamabad were each awarded four district-level licences.

The regulator also expanded licensing to underserved areas, including South Waziristan and Lower Chitral, aiming to improve internet availability in remote and rural regions.

Officials expect the new licences to increase competition among internet service providers, improve broadband quality and affordability, and accelerate digital inclusion across the country.

The expansion is also expected to support economic growth by enhancing access to online education, digital services, e-commerce, and remote work opportunities, particularly in less-developed districts.
