ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered authorities to transfer Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder and former prime minister Imran Khan from Adiala Jail to Shifa International Hospital for medical assessment and treatment until September 16.

A three-member Supreme Court bench, headed by Justice Shahid Waheed and comprising Justice Naeem Akhtar Afghan and Justice Ishtiaq Ibrahim, issued the interim order while hearing petitions seeking medical treatment for Imran Khan and access to meetings with his family members.

The petitions were filed by Dr Uzma Khan, Imran Khan’s sister, his lawyer Uzair Bhandari, and PTI leader Mashal Yousafzai.

The court directed the Adiala Jail authorities to make arrangements for the former premier’s transfer to Shifa International Hospital under tight security. Authorities were also instructed to ensure that the transfer and his hospital stay do not create any law-and-order problems.

The Supreme Court ordered the formation of a medical board to conduct a comprehensive assessment of Imran Khan’s health and oversee his treatment.

The court further directed that Dr Uzma Khan and Imran Khan’s personal physician be present during the medical assessment and treatment. The expenses related to the treatment will be borne by Imran Khan’s family.

According to the court’s interim directions, Imran Khan is to remain at Shifa International Hospital until the next hearing on September 16.

The bench also directed authorities to maintain confidentiality around the former prime minister’s medical information and stressed that his medical report should not be used for political purposes.

The Supreme Court warned that any violation of its directions could lead to the withdrawal of facilities currently being provided to the PTI founder.

During Tuesday’s hearing, the Supreme Court also directed the authorities to submit Imran Khan’s complete medical record.

Justice Shahid Waheed questioned Islamabad Advocate General Aamir Rehman over why the court had been provided only with a medical summary instead of the former premier’s complete medical record.

The Adiala Jail superintendent had submitted a two-page medical report to the Supreme Court on Monday outlining Imran Khan’s medical treatment and health monitoring during his imprisonment.

The report contained a summary of 39 medical examinations and consultations conducted by different specialists between November 4, 2023, and August 10, 2026.

The medical record stated that several government doctors had examined Imran Khan during his incarceration, with details of the consultations maintained by the jail authorities.

According to the medical report, Imran Khan has received treatment from ophthalmologists in Islamabad and Rawalpindi for central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO), an eye condition previously diagnosed in the PTI founder.

The report stated that the affected eye had almost regained normal vision following medical treatment and monitoring.

The Supreme Court’s decision to order a fresh medical assessment at Shifa International Hospital comes as petitions concerning Imran Khan’s health and access to his family continue before the court.

Imran Khan, 73, has remained incarcerated since August 2023 following convictions in several legal cases. Imran Khan and PTI have repeatedly rejected the allegations against him and described the cases as politically motivated.

The former prime minister was removed from office in April 2022 after losing a no-confidence vote in the National Assembly. Since then, he has faced multiple legal proceedings, including cases involving state gifts and his marriage.

Although some convictions have subsequently been suspended or overturned, several appeals and legal proceedings remain pending before the courts.

The Supreme Court’s latest order focuses specifically on Imran Khan’s medical assessment and treatment, with the next hearing scheduled for September 16.

The court has directed authorities to complete all necessary arrangements for his hospital transfer within a few days while ensuring strict security and maintaining public order around the hospital.
