WhatsApp has officially started rolling out its much-anticipated username reservation feature to a limited number of users, marking another step toward allowing people to connect without sharing their phone numbers.
The feature, first announced last month, enables users to reserve a unique username before its wider public release. Meta says the rollout is currently limited to a small group of beta testers and regular users, with broader availability expected in the coming weeks.
How the Username Reservation Feature Works
Eligible users can reserve a username by navigating to:
Settings > Account > Username
Once there, users can choose a unique username and configure privacy settings that determine who can contact them using that username.
WhatsApp also allows users to decide whether:
- Anyone with their username can start a conversation.
- New contacts must enter a four-digit PIN before initiating a chat.
These additional privacy controls are designed to reduce spam and give users greater control over who can reach them.
Extra Security Against Impersonation
To prevent impersonation and misuse of well-known usernames, WhatsApp has introduced an additional verification step.
If a selected username is already associated with an account on Facebook or Instagram, users may be asked to verify ownership of that account before the username can be activated.
The verification process aims to protect public figures, brands, businesses, and creators from identity theft and online scams.
Limited Rollout Underway
According to reports from WhatsApp feature tracker WABetaInfo, the platform has begun activating reserved usernames for a small number of eligible accounts.
Users who receive the feature will notice a banner at the top of their chat list confirming that their username is active and ready to be shared with others.
The rollout currently includes both beta testers and some regular WhatsApp users, although access remains limited.
How to Check If You Have the Feature
Users can verify whether the feature is available on their account by:
- Looking for a username activation banner at the top of the Chats screen.
- Opening Settings > Account > Username.
If the feature is enabled, WhatsApp will confirm that the username is active. Otherwise, users will see a message indicating that usernames will become available soon.
WhatsApp Continues Expanding Privacy Features
The username reservation system is part of WhatsApp’s broader effort to strengthen privacy, improve account security, and reduce dependence on phone numbers for communication.
