WhatsApp is testing new green dot, here’s what it means
WhatsApp is testing a new feature that will make it easier for users to know when their contacts are online. The messaging app has started rolling out a green online indicator to a limited number of iPhone beta users after previously testing the feature on Android devices.
According to WABetaInfo, the feature is available in WhatsApp for iOS beta version 26.26.19.72.
With the update, beta users can see a small green dot displayed at the bottom-right corner of a contact’s profile picture on the Contact Info screen whenever that person is online. The indicator automatically disappears when the contact goes offline, providing a quick visual indication of their availability.
For now, the feature is only accessible through a contact’s profile page. Users need to open the contact’s profile to view the online indicator, as it has not yet been integrated into the main chats list or Chats tab. This means users still cannot see who is online directly from their conversation list.
WhatsApp has not confirmed when the feature will be released to all users. The company is expected to continue testing it with beta participants before deciding on a wider rollout.
In addition to the online indicator, WhatsApp is also working on a new usernames feature designed to improve privacy. The upcoming feature will allow users to connect with others using unique usernames instead of sharing their phone numbers.
However, reports indicate that the usernames feature is currently under review after authorities raised concerns that scammers could misuse usernames to impersonate trusted individuals or organisations before it becomes widely available.
