A devastating roof collapse at an unregistered private tuition centre in Lahore’s suburban Kahna area on Tuesday has left 14 children dead and several others injured, plunging the local community into profound grief. The victims, aged mostly between 4 and 12 years old, were attending after-school lessons when the roof of the residential structure caved in, trapping over 30 students and their female teacher beneath the heavy debris. Frantic rescue efforts by emergency services and local residents successfully pulled survivors from the rubble, but 14 young lives could not be saved, while a few remaining children and the critically injured teacher continue to receive emergency medical care.
Initial investigations reveal that severe negligence and structural overloading caused the catastrophe. While classes were being conducted on the ground floor of the dilapidated building, construction workers were actively dumping heavy soil onto the unfinished second-floor roof, causing a central support girder to snap under the excessive weight. In the wake of intense public anger over the lack of safety standards, the Lahore police have registered a manslaughter case and detained five individuals, including the property owners and the construction contractor. Both Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz have expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, ordering a strict inquiry and directing authorities to launch an immediate safety survey of rundown buildings ahead of the monsoon season.
