Andy Burnham has taken a major step toward becoming the next UK prime minister after securing overwhelming backing from Labour MPs in the race to succeed Keir Starmer as leader of the Labour Party.
Burnham’s leadership campaign has received the support of 322 out of 402 Labour MPs, making him the only officially declared candidate in the contest. The strong endorsement places him just one nomination short of the 323 MPs required to make it mathematically impossible for another candidate to enter the race.
Several Labour MPs who were unable to participate in Thursday’s nomination process have indicated they plan to back Burnham once they return to Parliament, further strengthening his position.
If no additional candidates join the leadership contest, as widely anticipated, Burnham is expected to be formally confirmed as Labour leader next week. He is then set to take office as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom on 20 July, marking a significant political transition.
Burnham’s rapid rise comes only weeks after his victory in the Makerfield by-election, a result that returned the former Greater Manchester mayor to Westminster and positioned him as the frontrunner for the party’s top job.
Responding to the wave of support, Burnham thanked Labour MPs for their confidence in his leadership and pledged to pursue a new direction for the country.
“I am deeply grateful to the Labour MPs who have nominated me to lead our party,” Burnham said in a statement.
He added that the broad support from across the parliamentary party reflected a shared commitment to changing the way Britain is governed.
Burnham said his vision includes devolving more power away from Westminster, reshaping the economy to benefit working people, and promoting sustainable economic growth in communities across the UK.
With overwhelming parliamentary backing and no serious challenger emerging, Burnham appears on course to become the next Labour leader and Britain’s next prime minister, pending the formal completion of the leadership process.
