Prosecutors Flag Major Flaws in Gul Plaza Fire Investigation

Prosecutors have raised fresh concerns over the police investigation into the deadly Gul Plaza fire in Karachi, returning the charge sheet after identifying significant shortcomings in the inquiry. According to sources, investigators failed to address earlier objections, leaving the report incomplete and unsuitable for court proceedings.

The prosecution said the charge sheet did not include the judicial commission’s report, lacked a proper investigation into blocked emergency exits, and failed to determine who was responsible for obstructing evacuation routes. Investigators also did not examine allegations that multiple unauthorized shops had been constructed inside Gul Plaza or adequately involve key civic agencies, including the Sindh Building Control Authority, Karachi Development Authority, Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, and the fire brigade.
