The Chief Minister revealed that these administrative overhauls are directly informed by the systemic hardships she personally witnessed and endured during her own time in prison. Recalling her incarceration alongside her father, former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, she detailed the severe challenges she faced, ranging from solitary confinement and lack of timely medical access to inadequate hygiene and sanitation standards.
In an emotional reflection, Maryam Nawaz shared that her push for structural prison reform is deeply rooted in personal tragedy, noting that she was denied permission to visit her ailing mother and remained behind bars when her mother ultimately passed away. The conference also featured Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti, who outlined parallel reform initiatives in his own province, including extensive CCTV installation, the construction of modern facilities to counter overcrowding, and specialized vocational and drug rehabilitation programs. Together, the provincial leadership emphasized a shifted focus toward prisoner welfare, human rights, and the modernization of Pakistan’s penal system.
