AMMAN: The United States has intensified its military campaign against Iran, launching a fresh wave of airstrikes while confirming that a third American service member has been killed during operations in the Middle East since Friday, further escalating tensions between the two countries.
According to the US Central Command (CENTCOM), the latest airstrikes marked the ninth consecutive day of military action against Iranian targets following the collapse of peace negotiations over the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil shipping route.
Third US Service Member Confirmed Dead
CENTCOM said the latest casualty occurred during a controlled detonation of an Iranian drone in Iraq’s Kurdistan Region. The military did not release the identity of the deceased pending notification of next of kin.
The announcement came just days after two US military personnel were killed in an Iranian missile strike on a military base in Jordan.
Military officials also confirmed that unidentified human remains had been recovered from the Jordanian base targeted in Friday’s attack. Authorities said forensic examinations are underway to determine whether the remains belong to another US service member.
US Continues Air Campaign Against Iran
The latest strikes are part of an expanding US military operation aimed at degrading Iran’s military capabilities following renewed hostilities between the two countries.
The air campaign began after diplomatic negotiations between Washington and Tehran collapsed over disagreements surrounding a proposed memorandum concerning navigation and security in the Strait of Hormuz, through which nearly one-fifth of the world’s oil shipments typically pass.
US officials have said the strikes are intended to weaken Iran’s ability to threaten international shipping and protect American personnel stationed across the Middle East.
Regional Tensions Continue to Rise
The deaths of three US service members within days highlight the growing risks facing American forces deployed across Iraq, Jordan, and other parts of the region.
The renewed conflict has raised concerns about a broader regional escalation, with attacks increasingly involving drones, ballistic missiles, and strategic military infrastructure.
